The dyke hike offered by the Wadden Sea Protection Station takes you into the world of Hauke Haien from the novella “Der Schimmelreiter” by Theodor Storm. On the dyke, which played a central role in the novella, you will read from selected passages and learn interesting facts about dyke construction and Beltringharder Koog.

The world’s largest contiguous tidal flat area is ecologically unique and offers diverse habitats for numerous animal and plant species. As an important resting and feeding place for millions of migratory birds, the Wadden Sea contributes to the preservation of biodiversity.
The Wadden Sea Protection Station has been working to preserve the unique nature of our coastline for over 60 years. With around 100 volunteers in almost 20 stations every year, environmental monitoring and hazard identification in the Wadden Sea are among its central tasks. This has also contributed to the fact that this region is now protected as a national park and UNESCO World Heritage Site.
